Calliope’s featured teacher for the month of August is songwriter Heather Kropf. Trained in classical piano and fine art, Heather's musical influences are broad in scope and lyrical color, ranging from 70s singer/songwriters to AAA pop and neo-soul of today. Her recently released album "What Else is Love" was awarded the honor of top Pittsburgh album of the year by WYEP, 91.3 FM Pittsburgh.

Heather has opened for such esteemed artists as Peter Himmelman, Eleanor McEvoy, Ben Arnold, Carrie Newcomer, Betty LaVette, The Weepies, and many more. Currently, she is working on writing and recording a solo vocal/piano album for all her dedicated coffee shop fans.

When asked to describe herself as a teacher, this is how Heather responded: “I hope to create a creative space where people can ask questions, share ideas, get feedback, and have some fun creating songs. My goal is that students, in the process of doing exercises and listening to others, will find their own songwriting voice. I see my role as less of a teacher or instructor, and more of a coach and peer.”

Some of her personal favorites include Corrine Bailey Rae's debut album, David Sylvian's album "Dead Bees on a Cake", and Lizz Wright's "Dreaming Wide Awake".

Heather has released two solo albums, “Sky” (2000) and “What Else is Love” (2005), as well as contributing to the following releases:
