Calliope Emerging Legends Series

The University of Pittsburgh Library System (ULS) and Calliope: The Pittsburgh Folk Music Society have joined together to present The Emerging Legends Series at The Cup & Chaucer, the Hillman Library’s café on the ground floor of the library.

The Emerging Legends Series is free and open to the public and will feature concerts
throughout the 08-09 school year.

11/20 Ellen Gozion and Friends (Thursday, 12:30pm-1:30pm) Ellen Gozion’s solo release Awake, Awake is a collection of a cappella ballads, accompanied songs and dance tunes from the southern Appalachians and the British Isles. Pittsburgh Magazine writes, "Gozion's voice is plaintive and haunting, giving full expression to the emotions held in the song." Ellen will appear with artists Mark Tamsula, Kathy Fallon, and Donna Isaac. http://www.ellengozion.com

1/15 Steve Weber & Phil Smith (Thursday, 12:30pm-1:30pm) University of Pittsburgh Professor of Chemistry Steve Weber and Professor of English Phil Smith perform acoustic blues and ragtime. Professor of English Phil Smith teaches a popular university course entitled Ballads & Blues, which focuses on the history of blues music.

3/19 Carol Palmer and Friends (Thursday, 12:30pm-1:30pm) Carol Palmer teaches mandolin classes at the Calliope School of Folk Music. She will appear with a mandolin ensemble, which will include Gordon Neidinger, a young mandolin player and past Calliope student.

4/16 Emily Pinkerton and Friends (Thursday, 12:30pm-1:30pm) When she lays down South American grooves on guitar, audiences are hard-pressed to tell that Emily Pinkerton is a native of the Midwest. Born and raised in Valparaiso, Indiana, her musical education carried her to Valparaíso, Chile, inspiring a decade of immersion in Latin American music. Also a PhD of Ethnomusicology, Emily weaves a vibrant tapestry of sound on guitar, fiddle and banjo that is North American, South American and entirely unique. http://www.emilypinkerton.com

5/5 Jack Williams (Tuesday, 12:00pm) Jack Williams is a guitarist, singer-songwriter and storyteller from South Carolina; he is one of the most outstanding performers on today’s folk circuit.  During his 50+ year career, Jack has become a sought after artist on contemporary acoustic and folk music stagesPeter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul and Mary) called Jack “the best guitar-player I’ve ever heard.” Jack also played during the 1960s during the Civil Rights Movement, and during that era backed up artists such as the Shirelles, the Del-Vikings, the Coasters, Drifters, and the Platters.
